Number 12 Cafe is conveniently located close to the corner of King William Street and Halifax Street. Only open during the week for breakfast and lunch, this place offers sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs and a selection of vegetarian options. Apart from the fact that they’re close to my tram stop, I was drawn in by their daily lunch specials that are very reasonably priced.
For lunch, I had the Basil Pesto Pasta with cherry tomatoes and parmesan cheese. Chicken was added to the meal for an extra $1. The dish was ready 15 minutes after ordering and was well presented with a rather generous serving size.
The smell of the dish was wonderful as it had a delicate menthol aroma from the basil. The basil pesto had a slightly sweet flavour with a subtle nutty aftertaste from the pine nuts. The basil pesto was well distributed as it completely covered the al dente penne pasta. The generous shavings of parmesan added much need saltiness, while the natural sweetness of the cherry tomatoes provided good balance to the dish.
If I was going to split hairs, I would have said the basil pesto sauce needed more garlic, but otherwise it was a very well executed dish.
The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing was good value. The cost my meal was $9.90 which is the ideal amount I should be paying for lunch. The serving size was generous, premium quality ingredients were used, the dish was well executed and it tasted great.
I think I’ll have to visit this place more often!
