Soonta – Waymouth St

Out of the three Soonta stores, this particular one on Waymouth Street seems to be the most popular. Everytime I’ve walked past, there’s always a line 10 people long. Like their other stores, there’s a selection of Vietnamese rolls, salad bowls, noodle bowls, cold rolls and spring rolls to choose from.

For lunch, I ordered the Roast Pork Roll. Like their other stores, they had roughly a dozen pre-made rolls without meat ready to go. I know they do this to save time, but it does affect the quality of the roll. Vegetables that have been sitting inside a roll for 30 minutes don’t taste as good as ones that are put in straight after ordering.

The roast pork on this occasion was superb. It was chopped after being taken straight out of the oven. The pork was chopped into generous sized morsels. The meat was lean, tender and succulent, and the proportion of meat to crunchy skin was just right. The pickled carrot and daikon was sweet and tangy, while the egg mayonnaise prevented the roll from being too dry. The coriander was fresh and the cucumber added a nice crunchy texture. Chilli paste was added which added a bit of bite. The bread wasn’t very good today. It was soft and not crusty at all.

The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. The cost of the roll was $6.30, which is slightly higher than their competitors. Roast pork was really good today, only because it was just cooked and fresh out of the oven.
