Devour Cafe Patisserie

Devour are like pioneers on the dessert scene as they were one of the first to open up a dessert bar in Adelaide. Branching off on their success is the Devour Cafe Patisserie which is located in the back streets of Richmond.

As a cafe, there is a small selection of food offerings for both breakfast and lunch. I counted about 10 items on their breakfast menu and 6 on the chalkboard lunch menu. Not surprisingly, there is a selection of desserts behind the counter, however, there’s a limited number of choices and they’re a lot smaller.

The decor is very minimalist and the store itself is deceptively spacious. The use of blacks and whites is quite prominent and can often make a place feel confined, but this is offset by the abundance of natural light that comes in. The place is neat and well presented, and the store just has a casual vibe.

For lunch, I ordered the Steak Sandwich. The meal came out after a 15 minute wait and was nicely presented. The steak was tender and succulent, although a little on the thin side. The bacon was nice and smokey, and fried until crispy. The rocket was fresh and crisp, and the tomato was soft and ripe. The red onion added a nice natural sweetness, while the bun was a little greasy at the base, yet still firm enough to hold all the ingredients. I’ve had larger steak sandwiches at this price point, but having said that, it was a very tasty steak sandwich with a combination of ingredients.

My friend had the Pumpkin Soup with almond, cream and herbs. The soup had a nice thick consistency and was full of flavour.

The staff were friendly and the service was good for the most part. Our plates were never cleared when we finished our meals, and we were surprised they didn’t have EFTPOS facilities. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed, with the lunchtime crowd mainly consisting of locals and people who work nearby.

I thought the pricing of the food here is slightly higher than average. My steak sandwich set me back $16, while the soup was $12. Given that it’s a shop that’s not on the main road, I would have expected the food to be cheaper. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal.
