The Little Hunter is a new steak and ale bar located down a small side street next to the Playford Hotel. There was a restaurant with the same name in Melbourne that shut down late last year, but I’m not sure that they’re related.
As their signage suggests, steak is what they specialise in, with over half a dozen options to choose from. Their steak is chargrilled and a unique baste is applied during the cooking process. They also have a selection of main meals which closely resemble your typical pub fare.

This place has a definite warehouse feel about it. I love the exposed brick work, the high ceilings, the low hanging light fittings and the transparent dividers. While some parts of this place remind me of the Woolshed next door, there are certain elements of this place that make it a touch classier.

For lunch, I ordered the Scotch Fillet with a side of mashed potato and garden salad. The meal came out after a 15 minute wait and average in presentation. I asked for the meat to be cooked medium rare, but due to the inconsistent thickness of the beef, the thinner parts were cooked medium, while the thicker portions were medium rare. The beef was still tender and succulent and you could taste the smokey flavours from the chargrill.
There was certainly a generous amount of garden salad as it was piled up on the plate like a pyramid. The vegetables were fresh and crisp, and the right amount of vinaigrette dressing was applied. The mashed potato was soft and creamy, and overall, the dish was well executed.

My friend had the Angus Beef Porterhouse with chips and steamed vegetables. She was quite content with her meal as well. I nicked a few of her chips and can say they were cooked to perfection. Nice and crunchy on the outside while soft and fluffy in the centre.

The staff were friendly and the service was good. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing for the steaks is higher than average. The steaks range between $26 to $37, with my steak setting me back $30. The meal was quite substantial and the dish itself was well cooked, so perhaps it was worth it. There are cheaper options such as the Chicken Parmigiana and Wagyu Hamburger for under $20, so it’s not all expensive.
