Dorsal Fin Cafe

Dorsal Fin is a new cafe located upstairs in City Cross Arcade and occupies the premises where Billy Baxter’s once was. The establishment is neat and well presented, and although there no natural light coming into the place, the floor to ceiling windows does make the place feel less enclosed. One of the main walls displays the full menu which mainly consists of seafood and traditional Greek dishes.

For lunch, I had the Lamb Yiros on a plate. The meal was ready after a 15 minute wait and was nicely presented. My initial impression was that the serving of lamb was rather conservative, but in the end, it was just enough. The lamb was lean and well marinated, although the meat was a bit charred and a little on the salty side.

The garlic sauce had a nice thick consistency and the proportions of yoghurt, garlic and lemon juice were spot on. The pita bread was lightly grilled with a few dashes of olive oil on top. The tomato was fresh and the cucumber added a nice crunchy texture. The sweetness from the red onion and roasted capsicum was well balanced by the saltiness of the feta cheese and olives. Under all the salad was a coleslaw that was over saturated with dressing.

My friend had the Chilli Calamari and said it was good. Like me, she was put off by the coleslaw.

The staff were friendly and the service was good. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing was reasonable. My Lamb Yiros Plate set me back $11.50 which is cheaper than the same dish downstairs at the local food court. There was a lot less meat so you need to take that into account.

All in all, this place wasn’t too bad.

Had a nice lunch with work colleagues and couldn’t fault the service or quality of food, but decided to take a friend there for lunch and it was a disaster, ordered an Aussie Beef Burger, came out half cooked so sent it back, they apologized and said they would redo the order, the same burger came out still half cooked, the chips were by now lukewarm, they sent the cook out who tried to say the burger was cooked and was quite rude with no apology. I will not be recommending this café to anyone and will most definitely not be going back. Courtesy goes a long way.
