Latin American cuisine seems to be all the craze at the moment with one of the newer stores being Fire On Unley. Located on the popular Unley Road cafe precinct, this restaurant specialises in Argentinian cuisine as well as wood fired pizza.
The first thing that strikes you about this place is the stylish and sophisticated decor. If I could name three memorable features of this place, it would be fireplace, the chandelier hanging over the fireplace and the blinged up woodoven. The use of dark colours is prominent throughout, however the open plan space makes this place less confined. While I came here in the evening, I would imagine the floor to ceiling windows across it’s two frontages would provide an abundance of natural light.
As a complimentary starter, we had freshly wood oven baked bread with dukkah, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and a serve of olives. The bread was warm, light and airy. The soaking of the bread into the olive oil and vinegar and then into the dukkah was delicious. Not many places do this for some reason and I’m not sure why.
For the main, I ordered the Pork Belly but ended up getting a Pork Chop. The chop was of a considerable thickness and it was smothered in a barbecue-like sauce that had a subtle sweetness. The meat was tender, succulent and juicy and the pork had silky smooth texture. It was almost like eating butter. I’ve never had pork this good in my life.
Every table that orders a meat dish gets given bottle of chimichurri sauce. Their sauce didn’t have too much heat but you could taste the distinct flavours of coriander and garlic. Other Argentinian restaurants make their sauce thicker, but it’s a matter of preference as to how you like it.
The main came with a side of rocket and fried potatoes. The rocket was fresh and crisp, while the potatoes were perfectly fried and well seasoned.
My friend had the 300g Eye Fillet Steak. He said it was one of the best steaks he’d ever had.
The signature dish at this place is the Mixed Grill for two. This was a photo of somebody else’s dish but it is something I will be trying on my next visit.
The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the service was excellent. The waiter we had was attentive and not overbearing. Drinks arrived soon after ordering and plates were cleared as we finished. The atmosphere was relaxed, even as it became a full house later on in the night. The pricing is slightly on the higher side with mains ranging between $25 to $40, however, you are getting a close to fine dining experience.
If I could make one criticism of this place, I think that they’ve tried to cram in too many tables and chairs into this place. We were sitting at a table next to a couple literally no more than a metre away. We could hear their conversations and they could hear ours. With that being said, this occurred later in the night just when we were finishing and didn’t detract from the overall experience.
The Fire On Unley serves Argentinian food at it’s best. I can’t wait to come back to this place.
