I didn’t know this place existed until a tip off from a friend. Tony Tomatoes is located towards the northern end of O’Connell Street and the only signage at this place is a picture of a red tomato. If you look down at the floor near the entrance, you will actually see the name of this place. The decor is modern and contemporary with good use of timber throughout.
The main specialty here is pizzas with 4 types of pizza bases to choose from:
- 72 hour classic base – uses a white high protein flour, comes in a thin base and is proved for 72 hours.
- Gluten free base
- Superleggera – super light crisp base made from rye, oats and wheatgerm.
- Thick Tony special – high rise, rustic, big fluffy base
The pizza selection varies depending on the base you select, however, if pizza isn’t your fancy, there are some alternative meal options such as meatballs, meat skewers and arancini balls.

Tonight, we ordered the Salame Pizza (salami, black olives) which had a 72 hour classic base. The pizza was ready 10 minutes after ordering and was nicely presented. The salami was tasty and the olives were of a good quality. There was also a satisfactory amount of toppings on the pizza. The pizza base was very thin, and it’s entirely possible to eat a whole pizza by yourself.

The staff were friendly and attentive, and the service was above average. One of the staff members was trying really hard to up sell but we were in a hurry to catch a movie. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing, we felt, was a bit high for what you got. The pizza was $21 which probably wasn’t worth that much.
This place does most things right, however, for those that are hungry, I would suggest going for the thicker base.
