Go-In Hot Pot Train

Go-In Hot Pot Train was previously located on Hindley Street but has now moved to a more convenient Gouger Street location. Believe it or not, this is the first time I’ve ever been out for anything like this and personally, I think the concept is fantastic. Don’t be deceived by the name, there actually is no train. I’ve been told there once was a train in the Hindley Street store and that would bring around all the vegetable servings.

There are two hotpot sizes; a small individual one or a larger version for sharing. You then pick a soup base and there are a dozen or so to choose from. After that, you can select from a variety of vegetables, noodles and meat platters to add the soup base. There are also various sauces and condiments for you to choose from for an extra $1.50. If you go for the individual hotpots, each person gets their own little burner which constantly heats the soup base. A person regularly comes around to refill the soup container with broth as the levels become low. The heat level on the burners can also be adjusted.

Tonight, I ordered the Kim Chi Soup Base. It was really good. The soup was full of flavour and had fresh chillis inside to give it plenty of bite. The only issue I had was when the soup was being refilled with the broth. The process actually dilutes the flavour of the soup. If you’re using the soup as something to heat the ingredients, that’s fine, but if you’re drinking the soup, then it’s a problem.

The Fish and Roe Balls were really good. The roe eggs burst out when you bite into them so it’s best to swallow them whole.

The Enoki Mushrooms are just that. Nice and stringy, and absorb the flavours of the soup quite well.

The Crab Meat is just flour with artificial colouring. It didn’t even look like crab but some floury dough. I wouldn’t select this one again.

The beef and lamb were thinly sliced to ensure they were easily cooked inside the soup.

A selection of 4 different meatballs; fish, beef, squid and prawn.

The staff were friendly and the service was very good. The atmosphere was vibrant, particularly with the dinner crowd. The pricing was reasonable considering the variety you get, particularly when sharing the ingredients among friends. The full cost ended up to be $25 which was quite a decent feed. There is a fair amount of splatter from the soup and your face will feel kind of oily after you’ve finished your meal.

I thought it was really good and I will definitely be back.
