Chef Lai Noodle Bar

Chef Lai Noodle Bar isn’t in the most obvious of locations. The place is located towards the end of a side street opposite the Thuan Phat Asian grocery. The decor is basic with cafe style furnishings and ceramic tiles. The orange walls do match the tables so I’ll give them some credit for colour coordination. The place is relatively small and has a high customer turnover. With a simple menu offering Malaysian cuisine, it’s one of those places where you eat and run.

While I was at the premises, I noticed several customers had ordered the Fried Chicken Rice. Curious as to what all the fuss was about, I decided to order the dish as well. The meal was ready after a 15 minute wait and was nicely presented. The chicken was well marinated and was simply a piece of thigh sliced down the main joint. The meat was tender and succulent, and it had a nice thick crunchy battered coating. While the portion looked generous, the chicken was actually big boned, and behind all that batter, was very little meat. There was plenty of rice left over after eating all the chicken.

My friend had the Singapore Rice Noodles. I had the opportunity to try some and thought it was delicious. The vegetables were fresh and crisp, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. The dish was well balanced with plenty of depth.

The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing represents good value. Night or day, the meals are around $10 which isn’t too bad when compared to other eateries. I imagine you’re paying similar prices at a food court.

I’d come back to this place, but I’d probably go for their noodles next time.

    1. Having travelled through Europe recently, I agree! Adelaide is a melting pot of cultures and cuisines. Of course, this blog will be a great guide on where to go. 🙂
