After reading all the negative reviews of this place, I came here with little expectation and was pleasantly surprised. Wine Underground is located towards the centre of Pirie Street in a nice modern building (it used to be in an old building that exploded and was then redeveloped). The decor is sleek and stylish with good use of grey, brown and white colour tones. The mirrored wall at the back gives the illusion of spaciousness, and the open bench area at the front provides much needed natural light and ventilation.

The menu reads like something you’d see in a typical pub with a range of Mediterranean inspired tapas dishes, salads, burgers, mains and pastas. The pricing seems to be a bit higher, but it is consistent with the upmarket vibe of the place.

Today, I ordered the Slow Cooked Lamb Burger. The lamb was well marinated, tender and juicy. The meat was delicate and simply fell apart. It was about an inch thick and had appropriate coverage on the bun. The tzatziki sauce was generously applied and had a nice smooth consistency. It prevented the burger from being too dry and it complimented the lamb well. The lettuce, tomato and Spanish onion were fresh and crisp, while the bun was lightly toasted. The chips were well cooked and an adequate amount of salt was applied.

My friend had the Open Steak Sandwich and she said it was delicious.

The staff were friendly and the service was above average. Menus were brought out, plates were setup and drinks arrived promptly. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing was a bit more expensive that what I would usually pay. My burger was $18, but it was really good and worth that amount.
Contrary to the other reviews about this place, my experience was quite pleasant and enjoyable. I will certainly be back.
