Don’t you hate it when eateries are closed over the Christmas and New Years break? We found ourselves in this situation today when a nearby French eatery was closed. With very few breakfast options in the Goodwood area, we wandered over to Ginger’s Coffee Studio. With nothing else open on a Sunday morning, this place was literally making a killling. People wanting a table had to register their name on a waiting list, and it was a good 45 minutes before we got seats!
This place has an eclectic retro vibe about it. Upon entering, the coffee area had lime green patterned wallpaper and the orange semi-spherical light fittings which reminded me of something out of the 70’s. Around the corner in the dining area, there are exposed walls, steel beams over the bar area and low hanging light fittings which gave it more of an industrial warehouse feel.

For breakfast, I ordered the Bubble N Squeak. The dish was ready after a 20 minute wait and was average in presentation. The eggs were cooked sunny side up with the yolk still runny (just the way I like it). The pan fried potatoes and mixed vegetables were soft and yet firm. The tomato and fennel chutney had a subtle sweetness about it which gave the dish nice depth. The rocket was fresh and crisp, but was only there for aesthetics.

My friend ordered the Smoked Salmon Omelette. It was reported that the omelette was salty, however, when I tried a bit, it was OK, but nothing to write home about.

Another friend had the Ginger’s Big Breakfast. It was so big my friend failed to finish it.

The staff were friendly and the service was good for the most part. We did have to wait a long time to get both our table and meals, but I guess that is expected when it’s a full house. The atmosphere was vibrant with all the customers in the store. At times we had to resort to shouting to hear each other, which doesn’t happen very often on a Sunday morning. The pricing was average with the most expensive breakfast item being the Big Breakfast at $19. The Bubble N Squeak was $14 which was quite conservative in size. Representing the best value for money due to it’s size was the Smoked Salmon Omelette which came in at $16.
This place really is a hipster hangout which is the reason why it’s so popular. This was also the root cause of our waiting times, but I can’t really fault the place because of it. It was good and I would eat here again.
