There are two stores named Birdcage on the same street, so this store should not be confused with the women’s clothing store a bit further down.
Birdcage is a cosy little dessert store on the eastern end of Rundle Street. The decor is stylish and elegant with nice earthy colour tones. The wrought iron clock and birdcages hanging off the wall are nicely colour coordinated with the furnishings. The silhouette of birds painted on the walls really sets the theme of this place quite well and the chandeliers give this place a touch of class.
For me, this place is more of a cafe than a dessert bar. While all your traditional beverages are available, there are only a selection of 7 main desserts with an assortment of cakes and sweets at the counter cabinet. Even then, the main desserts are nothing spectacular with crepes, waffles and sundaes featuring predominantly.
Today, I ordered the New York Cheesecake which was nicely presented. The cheesecake was baked and was a bit on the small side. The filling was rich and delicate with a subtle sweetness. The cheesecake base was moist yet firm enough to break apart with a fork. It was really good cheesecake.

One friend had the Baklava and said it was delicious.

Another friend had the Concorde, which was a biscuit topping sitting on top of a chocolate mousse. She was quite content with her dessert.

Another friend has the Birds Of A Feather dessert which was banana, mango and passionfruit topped with ice cream, cream and chocolate. The chocolate sauce provided only came in dark chocolate.

Another friend had the 282 Waffle. The waffles were freshly made, although it was reported that there was too much chocolate on there and it became too sweet.

Another friend had the Whistling Crepes which is marscapone and macadamia filled crepes topped with strawberries, mango, ice cream and chocolate. Apparently, this was quite good, particularly with the fresh ripe mangoes.

The staff were really friendly and the service was above average. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing was a bit higher than other dessert places, particularly for desserts that can be considered simple. The presentation of the place itself and their products is quite good, but there’s just no wow factor in what they have to offer.
