The Oyster Shop is a small fish and chip store located down the busy end of Jetty Road. As their name suggests, they also serve oysters, shipped from Coffin Bay. There’s a take away section at the front, and a dine in section around the back. Not surprisingly, the take away menu is slightly cheaper than the dine in version. The decor here seems a bit out dated, but still acceptable.
Today, I ordered a serve of their Butterfish and Salad. The meal was ready after a 15 minute wait and was nicely presented. The butterfish was fresh and perfectly cooked. The fish was so soft and delicate, it literally melted in my mouth. The batter was light and thin, and the fish wasn’t too oily. This place was a finalist for the best fish and chips in Adelaide, and I can understand why. The salad was fresh and crisp, with a good selection of greens. The vinaigrette dressing was adequately applied.
The atmosphere was relaxed, even on such a busy section of Jetty Road. The customer service was below average. I felt this place was understaffed, and the store attendant behind the counter couldn’t keep up with both the take away and dine in customers. I had to wait a good 10 minutes just to pay my bill. The pricing is fair, particularly for a beach side suburb such as Glenelg.
With all that being said, the battered fish here is some of the best I’ve ever had.
