As I make my way through every Chinese restaurant down Gouger Street, the next place on the “places to eat” list is Wah Hing. The venue itself is long and narrow, with possible seating for about 50, and the front entrance can be a little deceiving, as it looks like you’re walking past windows. The food here is traditional with a reasonably sized menu. The decor is little bit more refined that your typical Chinese restaurant with clever use of mirrors to make the place feel larger.
Tonight, I ordered the Sizzling Sichuan Steak. The meals came out after a 15 minute wait and all meals arrived at the same time. The dish was nicely presented as were all the others. I loved how they used vegetables to improve the overall presentation. The steak was juicy and tender, but I guess that’s expected when you use soda powder as a tenderiser. The vegetables were fresh and crisp, and the sauce had a nice subtle sweetness. The dish itself was “I need 5 glasses of water right now” spicy. I actually didn’t mind because I’m always up for a bit of excitement on a Friday night.
The service here was pretty good, although the waiter was a little clumsy when it came to pouring the water into our glasses. The pricing is reasonable although they are slightly more expensive than their nearby competitors. The quality of the meals are pretty good as was the presentation. The dining experience was enjoyable, and at some point down the track, I shall be back.
