Taki Sushi and Tepanyaki is a food outlet in the Rundle Place food court. They mainly specialise in sushi and Tepanyaki bento boxes but they also sell a range of small Japanese snacks.
Today, I ordered the Tepanyaki Chicken Bento Box. The chef behind the grill didn’t really have much to do as he was cooking two pieces of chicken at a time. By the time I arrived, there was already a piece of chicken being kept warm on the grill. It was just cut up and put onto my bento box.
The Tepanyaki Chicken was well marinated, tender and succulent. It was sitting on a bed of salad that was fresh and crisp. The dressing that was used was light and tangy, and complimented the chicken well.
The two slices of chicken sushi that was provided was good. The rice was soft and moist, and it was obvious the sushi was freshly made. The karaage chicken was cold and tasted like it had been deep fried twice. The exterior was chewy and I could barely see any chicken.
The tempura crab stick sushi was also heavily battered and cold. The crab stick was the massed produced variety which is made out of flour. This is not uncommon at most Japanese places. The rice was well cooked. There were nice individual grains and each piece of rice was firm.

There aren’t too many Tepanyaki places in the city, so I guess this gave them the opportunity to charge customers more for the experience. Personally, I thought it was overpriced. One small chicken thigh fillet, a few chicken pieces and a few slices of sushi amongst plenty of rice and salad? The food was OK, but I’d rather have a proper dining experience.
