Simply Sushi is a sushi train store on Jetty Road in Glenelg. The first thing you notice about this store is the poor signage, particularly during the evening. Anyone who didn’t know where it was may have had trouble finding the place.
Upon entering the store, it appeared to be another Sushi Train imitation. The majority of the seating were bar stools around the revolving sushi plates with few seated tables in one corner of the room. The decor at this place was modern yet basic. The store itself did not have its own toilets but shared a communal one with other restaurants. The staff were friendly and inviting, and the service was pretty good. At times, I felt the staff were a little over attentive.
The following is a summary of the sushi plates that I had:
UNAGI NIGIRI – The eel wasn’t the freshest that I have tasted. It was almost as though it had been rotating around the tables since lunch time. The sushi rice was soft and moist, and the teriyaki sauce was light and subtle in flavour.
TEMPURA PRAWN ROLL – The prawn tasted like it has been cooked at the beginning of the day. I was expecting the batter on the prawn to be more crunchier and firmer in texture. The sushi rice, again, was soft and moist, as expected.

DRAGON ROLL – The eel, once again, was disappointing. It looked nice but tasted like it had been sitting around for a while. The cucumber was crunchy and the avocado was ripe. The sushi rice was soft and moist. The eel sauce was nice, but I’ve had better.
SPICY KING FISH HOSOMAKI – This one wasn’t rotating around the table so I ordered it off the menu. Having something freshly made was noticeably different. The flavours in the king fish were well balanced with a subtle kick in the after taste. The sushi rice was soft and moist, and the ingredients worked well together.
After coming here in the evening, I can’t say I noticed the freshness that people were talking about. The last sushi plate that I had was the freshest only because it was ordered off the menu and freshly made. The atmosphere was relaxed with low volume Western CD music playing in the background. I feel people pay a premium at these sushi stores just because the sushi plates revolve around the table. People are paying higher prices for the novelty. For me, the place was OK, but nothing to write home about.
