Pony Dining is located in one of Sydney’s oldest laneways within the historic and bustling dining precinct of The Rocks. Situated on the corner of Argyle Street and Kendall Lane, Pony was originally a former bond warehouse. The historic building has been transformed into a stunning dining space which features a large open plan kitchen, a 10m long dining table on the outdoor deck and heritage brick walls.
Widely regarded as the pioneers of the wood fire grill in Sydney, Pony offers an honest flavour driven menu showcasing Australian produce and a carefully crafted boutique selection of wines with a cheeky cocktail list. At the heart of the kitchen is a signature Argentinean wood fire grill and a contemporary modern Australian menu featuring the finest cuts of meat, freshest seafood and an array of shared and larger plates.
We started with the Seared Kangaroo with pepperberry dressing, raspberry and pickled currants. The thin slices of kangaroo had a silky, smooth texture, and we could see where they were going with all of the other contrasting elements of the dish; the spiciness of the pepperberry, sweetness of the raspberry and the sourness of the currants. Alas, the pepperberry was overpowering and that’s all you could taste of the dish.
For the main, we had the Wood Fire Grilled Salmon with roasted sweet corn, kohlrabi and harissa. This dish was exceptional and we’d gladly have it again and again. The salmon was perfectly cooked and exuded lovely smokey flavours from the wood fire. The skin was nice and crispy, and once you have a bite, it’s really hard to stop. The roasted sweet corn added a nice crunchy texture and its sweetness was complimented by the small cubes of kohlrabi. The harissa sauce provided nice colour and had a very subtle peppery flavour.
We also had a side of Wood Fire Grilled Carrots with cumin, lentils, dates and toasted sunflower seeds. The carrots were well cooked and still retained their firmness. The sunflower seeds added a crunchy texture while the dates added a lovely burst of sweetness.
Pony Dining The Rocks is open everyday from 11am-3pm and from 5:30pm-10pm.
