My Charcoal Kebab House

Afghan street food is nothing new but it is growing in popularity around Adelaide. My Charcoal Kebab House on Port Road serves up kebab dishes in its various forms. They have 3 types of skewers available in either lamb, lamb mince or chicken. These skewers are served with kabuli rice and salad, or inside a wrap. If kebabs aren’t your fancy, they have steamed dumplings, bolani, biryani, pulao and barbecue chicken.

The place is quite small with around 20 seats inside and a few more out on the pavement. The large windows at the front allow plenty of natural light in making this place nice and cosy.

For lunch, I ordered the Mixed Skewers. The dish came out after a 15 minute wait and was nicely presented.

The lamb skewer was amazing. The lamb was well marinated, lean, tender and succulent, and you could taste the smokey flavours in the meat. The chicken skewer had a nice orange colour, and was juicy and well cooked, but on it’s own, it really didn’t have much taste. The lamb mince skewer was my least favourite, but it was still well executed. The meat was well seasoned and a little on the chewy side, but that’s how they’re made.

The dish came with 2 dipping sauces; a spicy red Chatni sauce and a refreshing garlic sauce to balance the heat. It also came with a plain salad that consisted of red onion, cucumber and lettuce. To the other side of the dish was a mound of Kabuli rice. The rice was light, fluffy and fragrant with nice individual grains. The inclusion of sultanas added a lovely burst of sweetness.

The staff were friendly and the service and was fast and efficient. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing is on par with other Afghani street food places. The cost the Mixed Skewers was $15 which was reasonable considering the generous portion size, the quality of the ingredients and how tasty it was.

Definitely one of the better Afghani street food places in Adelaide.
