There are very few occasions where the first store of it’s kind in Australia opens in Adelaide. Less than a week old, Hello Kitty Cafe has opened up in the heart of Chinatown serving up freshly made desserts. The menu consists of over a dozen styles of dessert, each of which will have a cat face in one form or another. For those that want something a bit smaller or larger, there’s a small selection of sweets and cakes behind the counter.

As you would expect, this place is full of Hello Kitty paraphernalia. A majority of the seating are normal chairs with a few sofa options to one side.

For dessert, I ordered the Pinky Macaroon Burger. It comes with an oversized macaroon that is filled a rosy raspberry custard, mini raspberry jelly and strawberry.
Now this is not the first macaroon burger I’ve ever had, although it was simple and well presented. The exterior of the macaroon was firm and its inside, soft and chewy. The raspberry custard was rich and creamy, and complemented the sweetness of the jelly and the surrounding natural fruit pieces.

The Classic Honey Toast comes in a toasted honey and cinnamon loaf which is topped with custard, fresh cream, vanilla ice cream, apple slices, apple sauce and wafer sticks. Priced as a dessert for two, my friend easily polished off this dessert by herself. The external loaf was toasted and bland when eaten by itself. All the action seemed to be happening in the centre where all the cinnamon covered bread was.

The Green Tea Creme Brulee was served with green tea ice cream. I was told the Creme Brulee was nice at first but it became unpalatable as she had more. The ice cream was nice and wasn’t too bitter.

The Nuts and Banana Waffle came with banana slices, mixed nuts, caramel sauce, home made fresh cream and ice cream. It was then finished off with a chocolate ganache. The waffle was freshly made and I was told it was good.

The Caramelised Walnut cake isn’t on the menu but available from behind the counter. The cake was soft and delicate, and the layered cream was minimal. The flavour from the walnuts was quite prominent and added a nice crunchy texture.

The staff were friendly and the service was good. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing is higher than average. The dessert that I had was $15 which is about the price I’ve previously paid for an over sized macaroon. While it was well presented and tasted good, you didn’t get much for the price paid.
If you ignore all the hype about this place, I’d have to say the overall experience wasn’t too bad. With the higher than average pricing, it’s not a place I’d regularly frequent.
