Having driven past this place many times, I actually had no idea Silk and Spice existed, let alone the fact that this restaurant has been around for over 5 years. Silk and Spice is located in a renovated bungalow on the busy Henley Beach Road. Excluding the specials, there are over 40 dishes to choose from which are categorised into entrees, salads, soups, curries, meat, seafood, vegetarian, rice and noodle dishes. Anybody that is a fan of Thai food would be familiar with most of the dishes.

The decor is neat and well presented, with the dining areas seperated into three main rooms. The bold bright feature walls and the strategically positioned picture frames add a touch of traditionality to the space.

For dinner, I ordered the Mussaman Beef. The dish came out after a 15 minute wait and was nicely presented. The beef was lean and tender, and simply fell apart with a touch of the utensil. The sauce had a nice thick consistency and the flavour was just right. The potatoes were soft and delicate with the curry sauce well infused. The peanuts were firm and added a nice crunchy texture to the dish.

The other members of the group ordered the Pad Thai which they said was one of the best they’ve had.

For dessert, I ordered the Thai Sticky Rice with Banana. The rice was sticky and chewy with a banana and black bean centre.

Another person ordered the Coconut Panna Cotta with Mixed Berries. I’m guessing the inclusion of coconut makes it Thai, but it was very well received.

The other member of the group ordered the Sticky Rice with Thai Custard. While it wasn’t very appealing in terms of appearance, I was told it was delicious.

The staff were friendly and the service was very good. Drinks arrived promptly and were constantly refilled, dishes arrived on time and were cleared as each course was finished, and the staff constantly checked up on us to ensure the experience was a memorable one.
The pricing at the restaurant is on par with other Thai places. The Pad Thai was $12.90, the Mussaman Beef $14.90, and the desserts range from $7.50 to $9.50. Considering each and every dish was very well executed, this place represents good value for money.
It was only by chance that our group actually found this place, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Silk and Spice is a hidden gem on Henley Beach Road, and it certainly gives their competitors a run for their money.
