Grass Chicken

Grass Chicken is the latest to open down the notorious Hindley Street precinct. The use of the word “grass” is synonymous with the freshness of their chicken. The chicken is delivered two days prior and then marinated for at least a day before reaching the customer. To some extent, the menu reads like an Asian inspired KFC with fried chicken available in various forms.

The use of lime green seems to be popular with new stores these days and this one is no different. With nice stone benchtops and timber cladding, the space is neat and well presented. The windows at the entrance fold out making the place well ventilated while also maximising the amount of natural light that flows through.

For lunch, I ordered the Chicken Rice Burger. Keeping in mind I was the first customer of the day, they did require time to set up out in the kitchen. After a 30 minute wait, my burger finally arrived.

The chicken thigh fillet had a firm crisp coating and it’s appearance resembled something from KFC. The chicken was tender and succulent, and cooked to perfection. While it didn’t have your 11 secret herbs and spices, it did have some Asian flavours to it. To replace the typical bun, there was rice which was very delicate and easily fell apart.

The Sweet Potato Chips had a nice crisp coating and appeared to be fried twice. The chips had nice soft delicate centres with real natural sweetness.

The staff were friendly and the service was average. I felt I waited a bit too long for my burger. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing is reasonable. The cost of the burger was $7.90 which is quite good considering you’d pay more elsewhere. Some of their dishes start from $3 which is almost unheard of in the city centre.

While having a Chicken Rice Burger was a bit of a novelty, it’s not something I’m in a rush to have again. I think this place is perfect for a late night snack, especially after one too many drinks.
