The Lunch Room is located on Grenfell Street, close to Hindmarsh Square. Open for breakfast and lunch during the week, this place offers some straight forward breakfast options, a small selection of salads, baguettes, rolls, sandwiches, wraps, piadinas and grilled hotties. They also have a typical selection of coffees, chocolate drinks, teas and smoothies. The coffees are available in three sizes; small, regular and tall.

The decor is neat and well presented with a casual modern feel. The combination of bright orange and the abundance of natural light flowing through it’s dual frontage certainly makes this place light and airy. There’s plenty of seating at the split level section behind the serving area as well as a few more along the window and outside. Their main clientele appear to be office workers that are situated nearby.

For lunch, I ordered the Chilli Salami, Sundried Tomato, Rocket and Mozzarella Piadina. The dish was ready after a 10 minute wait and was average in presentation. Cutlery wasn’t provided which meant eating this was going to be messy, particularly with this specific set of ingredients.
The Italian flat bread was nice and crisp, and it came to my table piping hot. The natural sweetness of the sundried tomato complemented the heat of the chilli salami. The gooeyness of the mozzarella cheese was sensational and it was almost like eating pizza. The last time I had piadina, the rocket was used as a side which allows you to appreciate it’s crispy texture. When it’s included with the other ingredients, it just becomes soft and soggy, and you don’t really notice it’s there.

The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing was reasonable. The cost of the Piadina was $9.90 which is what you’d pay for the same dish elsewhere. Their dishes do go up to $16.90, which again, is not out of the ball park.
For a place that has been around for over 15 years, they’re certainly doing something right. The Piadina I had was pretty good which suggests they have their gourmet ingredient combinations down pat. Whether you come here for a coffee or for a meal that is fresh and satisfying, I think this place has got you covered.
