What a clever idea to convert an old railway shed into a cafe. That’s exactly what the owners of Entropy have done when they leased the space owned by Adelaide University. Finding the place can be a bit tricky, but there are two strategically located signs within the maze of side streets that will guide you on your way.
During the day, Entropy is open for breakfast and lunch with a simple and straight forward menu that has a focus on fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Come Friday night, and the place is converted into a Char/Bar where a selection of dishes (mainly meat) are cooked on their gourmet outdoor barbecue.

The striking features of this place are the large open space and the abundance of natural light that flows in from every direction. The tables are a decent size which makes it perfect for large groups.

For lunch, I ordered the Pickle Me which contains house roasted sirloin beef, Mt Jagger cheddar cheese and fine green pickle chutney on an organic sourdough ciabatta roll.
The dish was ready after a 10 minute wait and was nicely presented on a circular white plate. Inside the roll was three slices of tender, succulent, lean, well marinated pieces of beef overlapping one another like a broken stack of dominoes.
The tomato was sweet and ripe, and the rocket was fresh and crisp. The cheddar cheese had a subtle mild flavour which complemented the sweetness of the pickled chutney.
The ciabatta roll was buttered and lightly toasted. The crust was crisp and chewy, while the inside had a soft spongey crumb.
All the ingredients worked very well together, and the dish was perfectly executed.

The staff were friendly and the service was very good. The daily specials were carefully explained, the drinks came out promptly as did the meal, and my plate was cleared as I finished. The atmosphere was relaxed with relaxing tunes playing in the background. The cost of the roll was $13 which was very good considering the portion size and quality of the ingredients. The most you’ll pay with their daytime menu is $16.50 which is not unreasonable.
Verdict: I quite enjoyed my meal, and when you combine that with the atmosphere, service and location, I’d have no hesitation in recommending this place to others.
