Sumac Cafe

Set amongst other shops and eateries along Goodwood Road in Colonel Light Gardens is a Middle eastern cafe, Sumac. Serving up a variety of dishes for both breakfast and lunch, one of their popular items is the Manouche, which is a Lebanese style pizza with pita bread crust.

The place is nicely presented with touches of tradition. The establishment is nice and spacious with prominent use of browns. There’s plenty of natural light that flows in making this place bright and airy.

For lunch, I ordered the Meat Manouche which contains lamb mince, onion, tomato and spices.

The dish arrived 15 minutes after ordering and was nicely presented on a wooden chopping board. As the manouche was hand made, the pizza wasn’t a perfect circular shape, neither did it have a consistent thickness. Having said that, it did arrive at my table piping hot.

The lamb was well marinated and perfectly cooked. I could see the presence of onion, but the tomato was notably absent. The base was light and fluffy, and not oily at all. The manouche was a decent size and quite satisfying.

The staff were friendly and the service was good. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing is fairly reasonable. My meal set me back $7.50 which is on par with other places that sell the same dish. Looking at their menu, the average price is around $11 with some of their breakfast options going up to $19.

Verdict: A great place for authentic Middle eastern cuisine. I will be back.
