Krispy Kreme – West Croydon

For so many years, the people of Adelaide have been deprived of Krispy Kreme donuts. The most common way they were brought into the state was by purchasing them at an eastern state airport.

It was only earlier this week that the first of four Krispy Kreme donut stores opened in Adelaide. For four consecutive days, people were waiting for up to 2.5 hours to get their hands on donuts. For those that only wanted Original Glazed donuts, the wait wasn’t so long as they have a line that specifically caters for these customers. There’s also the option of 24 hour drive through, however, I wanted a box of assorted donuts and I didn’t want any mix ups with what I was selecting.

This place is probably one of the most impressive donut stores I’ve seen in my life. Set in a modern and stylish double storey complex, this place cost an estimated $2 millions dollars to build, although I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve already made their money back.

There are seats both on the ground level and upstairs, however, the most interesting feature of this place is the viewing area for where the donuts are made. Pumping out 5000 donuts per hour, you’re almost guaranteed fresh donuts. The process isn’t perfect though. About 1 in 50 donuts doesn’t flip over properly and are fried twice on one side and raw on the other. Then there are some donuts that have been formed together and are like Siamese twins. Of course, once it’s been iced and reaches the end of the line, the dud donuts are removed.

Out of all the donuts available in the Krispy Kreme collection, the Original Glazed is what they’re best known for, and in my opinion, the best of their offerings. The donuts are machine made and the glaze application is consistent. The top layer has a firm sweet sugary coating, while the inside is light and airy.

When I was waiting in line, I could see some of the staff putting together some of the assorted donut varieties. Some of donuts looked professionally made, while other lacked the presentation that you’d expect. There are some varieties that use the Original Glazed donut as a base, while others lacked the necessary sugar content. I suspect some of the assorted donut types were made up and they aren’t shown on their website.

My two favourites from the assorted range were the Karamel Glazed and the Choc Iced Custard. I love caramel and i love custard, so that decision was easy. The least favourite was the Choc Iced Almond. It didn’t have the original glaze and just tasted bland.

As of last night, the lines were still pretty long as the craze for Krispy Kreme continued. Once I got to the front of the line, the service was fairly fast with 4 store attendants on hand.

A dozen original glazed will set you back $18, while a box of assorted will cost you $27. There’s the option to buy half original glazed and half assorted for $22.50. It’s also cheaper if you buy multiple dozen. For example, two dozen assorted will set you back $45, while three dozen will cost you $63.

While other stores have tried to imitate the Krispy Kreme Original Glazed donut, no one has really succeeded and their signature donut still remains a favourite. Their other donuts are good for variety but are nothing really special.
