When I’m out and about at a particular location, I try to visit several places in the one outing. I might have a meal at one place and perhaps something a little sweeter at another. On this occasion, my sweet tooth was going to be satisfied at UR Caffe.
UR Caffe is located towards the eastern end of Melbourne Street amongst all the shops and eateries. The menu is fairly simple and straight forward with an all day breakfast and lunch menu.

You can tell how good a place is by the number of customers, and during my visit, I was quite fortunate to get a seat. The cafe is quaint with a nice open plan and eclectic furnishings. The main walls feature exposed brick on one side and a full length chalkboard on the other.

Today, I ordered the House Made Carrot Cake. My initial thought was the cupcake was very small in size, particularly for the price point.
The carrot cake was really moist, almost a little too moist that it had lost its crumb. The carrot was well refined and the walnuts were notably absent. I’m assuming they were substituted for the nuts, seeds and sultanas on top of the icing. The nuts and seeds provided a nice crunchy texture while the sultanas added a natural sweetness.
The cream cheese icing was tart from the inclusion of lemon rind. I felt it could have done with a bit more icing sugar.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the service was above average. I was allowed to change tables to one that had better lighting, and water was brought to my table without asking. The atmosphere was relaxed and cosy, even with a full house. The carrot cake was $5.20 which was slightly overpriced, average in taste and small in size.
I’ve read many positive reviews about this place, so perhaps their house made carrot cake is not a good indication of what they’re capable of. I’ll have to revisit this place and order something else at some point in the future.
