The Duke of Brunswick (or just The Brunswick) is located on the south west corner of the city on Gilbert Street. I’ve been to this place on many occasions but never ventured further than the front bar or the upstairs function room. From what I have seen, these two areas have an original art deco style. I can see how they’ve tried to use earthy colour tones, but with all the walls being a single colour, the place just feels bland and boring. The menu is fairly simple and straight forward with all you traditional pub favourites.
For lunch, I ordered the Brunswick Beef Burger. The meal arrived after a 15 minute wait and was average in presentation. I must admit I was expecting the burger to be a bit larger, particularly for the $16 price tag. The beef patty was slightly overcooked and incredibly salty. The meat could have been more refined as I encountered a few fatty bits in my patty. The bacon, surprisingly, was not salty and was fairly lean, although it could have been fried a bit longer until it was crisp. The lettuce and tomato were fresh and crisp and the combination of caramelised onion, beetroot and barbecue sauce added a fair amount of sweetness. The sesame seed bun was nice and firm, and solid enough to hold all the ingredients. The French fries were nice and crisp, and there was a generous amount, however, they were over salted.

The staff were friendly but I felt I was being rushed to make an order. I was asked what drink I wanted from the moment I stepped through the door and not long after looking at the food menu, I was asked what meal I wanted. Apart from the food being brought to my table, the service was pretty much non-existent. The atmosphere was relaxed, only because there was one other customer there besides myself. The pricing is fairly simple with snacks ranging between $4-$7 and all mains costing $16.
The burger was a bit small for the price and a bit too basic. Taste-wise, there were just too many issues for it to be enjoyable.
