Bobo H

Bobo H is a rather odd name for a restaurant, however, it stands for Bourgeois Bohemian. It’s the merging of two classes; the elegance and charm of the Bourgeois upper class and the passion and artistic flair of Bohemian culture. Set in a gorgeous heritage listed building, complete with solid marble walls and 10m high ceilings, Bobo H represents both style and sophistication in the most elegant of surroundings. This is also shown in their modern Asian cuisine and their Chinese cocktail concoctions.

One thing that sets this place apart from the rest is their all day happy hour. Selected cocktails are $10 from 11am to 7:30pm. Beers and house wines start from $6 and their martinis start from $10.

For dinner, I ordered the Salt and Pepper Salmon. The dish arrived after a 15 minute wait and came with a set of 4 accompaniments. One of the accompaniments was dry dates, while the other 3 were some form of pickled vegetables. Interesting tastes and textures that were probably not necessary.

The Salt and Pepper Salmon was the price of a main but the serving size of an entree. The presentation was immaculate and it’s not unexpected in a fine dining establishment. The salmon was perfectly cooked with a light crisp coating. The fish was tender and succulent, and seasoned with just the right amount of salt and pepper. It was a tasty dish but there just wasn’t enough. I feel ordering a main by itself should be sufficient to keep a customer satisfied, but it just wasn’t the case with this dish.

These are the dishes that the group ordered. The Spring Rolls and Dumplings in martini glasses were definitely a highlight in presentation. Everybody was quite content with their meals. With the exception of the Salt and Pepper Salmon and Lemon Chicken, all the other mains had decent serving sizes.

The staff were friendly and they were able to accommodate additional people that joined our dinner group in the last minute. The service was good at the beginning, however it dropped off as the night progressed. Drinks arrived promptly and plates were cleared as we finished, however, when it came to seeing the dessert menu and getting the bill, we had to ask several times. The atmosphere was relaxed in the most beautiful surroundings. They had live music playing in the background and dim lighting to set the mood. The pricing is on the upper end of the scale with mains ranging from $17-$40. My main costed around the $20 mark. It was nicely presented and well executed, but the serving size was too conservative and I probably needed an entree and dessert to walk away satisfied.
