Scuzzi

Try not to get “Scuzzi” in North Adelaide confused with “Scoozi” on Rundle Street. They are two different places.

Scuzzi is located on the corner of O’Connell Street and Tynte Street amongst other nearby Italian eateries. This place has certainly been around for a while as I remember coming here when I was back at university. The menu is fairly typical of the Italian cafe scene with bruschettas, focaccias, pizza, pasta, risotto and mains. The pizzas here come in two sizes; 9 inch and 12 inch.

For dinner, I ordered the Italiano pizza which consists of salami, ham, olives, dry chilli and anchovies. The pizza was ready 15 minutes after ordering and was nicely presented. The first thing I noticed was that there was hardly any cheese. It wasn’t even hidden under the toppings. The ham used was the processed variety, and not surprisingly, the toppings didn’t taste fresh. The pizza base was thin and of a consistent thickness throughout, however, it tasted really dry. There was the odd bit of saltiness from the anchovies and heat from the dry chilli, but otherwise, a disappointing pizza.

My friend ordered the Chicken Calzone which I was able to try. The calzone was practically drowning in the rose sauce, which was absolutely delicious. The chicken was slightly over cooked and the cheese was almost non-existent. The capsicum, mushroom and basil worked really well together and it had the makings of a very good dish.

The staff were friendly, and the service was average. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing was average. Both the pizza and calzone were under the $20 mark, which was fair considering the serving size. My pizza wasn’t great but the calzone wasn’t too bad.
