When it comes to street food, one of the new kids on the block is The Saigon Times. Located on the north western corner of Victoria Square, this eatery replaces the former Yumalicious Vietnamese take away store with something that is more modernised. The name of the store is based on a newspaper which is represented by the prominent use of black and white in the interior. Seating is in the form of communal tables and the low hanging light fittings gives this place an industrial warehouse feel.

The menu is fairly simple with a basic selection of offerings. There are Vietnamese bread rolls with various fillings, noodle and salad bowls, spring rolls, chicken wings and cold rolls. I was informed that other items will be available, but only as specials.

For lunch, I ordered a Roast Pork Roll. Made on the spot, I was pleased to see pate spread on one side of the roll and egg mayonnaise on the other. The roast pork was well marinated and provided in generous amounts. The meat was lean and tender, and balanced out by the perfectly crunchy skin.
The coriander and cucumber were fresh, and the pickled carrot provided a nice crunchy texture. The fresh chilli added a bit of excitement with every bite. The bread roll was nice and crusty, and I was told it was sourced from a bakery up north that has perfected the longevity of the crustiness.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and it was nice to see the owner introducing himself to customers and greeting repeat customers on a first name basis. The service was fast and efficient, and the atmosphere was relaxed. The pricing of their bread rolls is fairly average with my Roast Pork Roll setting me back $6. The pricing is dictated by the business running costs, so that needs to be taken into consideration.
Verdict: With great quality ingredients and constant refinement, this place makes a Roast Pork roll that is certainly up there with the best.
