Koko Black is to Melbourne, what Haighs is to Adelaide. After visiting one of their stores in Melbourne, I had already known they were coming to Adelaide and I had eagerly awaited their opening. The Adelaide store is located in Adelaide Arcade at the Rundle Mall entrance. There is a retail area at the front with sit down areas at the rear and upstairs. One of the features of this store is the open mezzanine, however, it’s not as spacious as the store I went to in Melbourne.
Koko Black prides themselves on the freshness and quality of their ingredients. For example, their truffles have a limited shelf life, while the cream and fruit that they use in their chocolate centres are fresh. While looking at the menu, I did notice it was almost identical to what I had seen in Melbourne 6 months ago, so I certainly hope it’s not always going to be the same.
Today, I ordered the Dessert Degustation. First up on the list was the Chocolate Ice Cream which sat on a bed of crunchy chocolate soil. It was very nice and chocolatey without being too rich.

The Opera Gateau was next which was a roasted coffee infused dark chocolate mousse layered with a hazelnut dacquoise and chewy caramel. This was my favourite and was like heaven on a plate.

The Raspberry Chocolate Dome is a milk chocolate and raspberry puree mousse with Madagascan vanilla custard and a liquid raspberry centre. The raspberry flavour certainly was there but it wasn’t to my liking.

The Chocolate Alchemy Cake is decadent chocolate cake layered with Madagascan chocolate creme and crunchy chocolate soil. This was my second favourite. The chocolate cake was rich but not too sweet, which means you can eat plenty of it.

The Belgian Chocolate Mousse was just that. The texture was smooth, delicate and not too sweet.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the service was very good. The waiter went through everything in the menu and drinks were constantly refilled the entire time. I did think the tables were a bit small, particularly with all the desserts. The pricing is very similar to what I paid in Melbourne and it was to be expected. It is pretty much on par with other dessert places.
It’s about time this store opened up in Adelaide as we always seem to be the last place where something good opens. I still had an enjoyable experience here, even on their first day opening. Definitely worth a visit!
