Gong Gong Makan Place

Gong Gong Makan Place is located in Renaissance Arcade food court at the eastern end of Rundle Mall. From what I could see, this place does a variety of Asian cuisines, and on this particular occasion, they had a Vietnamese menu. Seating is plentiful as they are one of the few stores to open on a weekend. They also have their own seats in store as well as the ones used by the food court.

Today, I ordered a Roast Pork Roll. The meal took 15 minutes to arrive which is a lot longer than expected. At other places the roll is made on the spot and handed to you, but at this place, the roll was lightly grilled before being prepared. The roast pork was well marinated and had a good meat to fat ratio. There were also crunchy bits of skin which was quite enjoyable to eat. The carrots were well pickled and provided a nice crunchy texture. The amount of coriander was also generously provided.

Criticisms of the Roast Pork Roll:

  • There was way too much soy sauce applied. The bread became soggy and too salty.
  • The bread wasn’t fresh and crusty as I would expect.
  • The ingredients weren’t evenly distributed. Too much pork, carrot and cucumber on their individual sides.
  • Fresh chilli was notably absent. While it wasn’t too bad, it could have done with a bit of a kick.

The staff were friendly and the service was good. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing in general was reasonable. A lot of the main dishes here are under $10 which is pretty good. The Roast Pork Roll was $6 which is slightly higher than average and was probably worth about $5.

The roast pork used was quite good, although it had more of a Chinese style marinate. I’d visit this place again for a cheap feed although I’d order something else.
