Yum Cha Hut

While yum cha in food courts is nothing new, I must say that I’m not really a fan. I find that a lot of the products are precooked and the personalised service is notably absent. I quite enjoy sitting at a table and having someone come round with a trolley of food. Anyway, Yum Cha Hut is the yum cha representative at the Myer Centre food court. The menu is fairly stock standard with all your yum cha favourites.

Today, I ordered the Savoury Dumplings and the BBQ Pork Pastry. The dishes were pre-prepared and were available immediately. The presentation was fairly basic with dishes being served on plastic plates. The Savoury Dumplings were a nice golden brown with a thick chewy exterior. It was slightly thicker than what I normally experience but the texture was just right. The pork filling was well balanced and full of flavour, although some pieces of pork were fatty.

The BBQ Pork Pastry was cold and possibly cooked an hour or two earlier. The pastry was firm and flaky, while the filling was slightly warm. The pork was lean and well marinated, and the flavours were spot on.

The staff were friendly and the service was fairly efficient. The pricing was on par with the dine in yum cha places which I disagree with, although the rent at these food court places probably justify this. Yum Cha places at food courts are disadvantaged by the lack of personalised service, and combined with the below average food that I had, didn’t make for a great experience.

It’s great that you can get yum cha in a food court, but sadly it’s just not the same as your dine in options.
