I’m already familiar with Lamb Spit BBQ as they have a store in the Central Markets. Located on Semaphore Road, literally metres away from the beach, I think this place is in a much better location, although, they are located next door to the number one fish and chip shop in Adelaide. The venue is a bit more spacious than the city store and their opening times are less restrictive. The decor is fairly basic but you need to remember that it’s just a take away store and not fine dining. Besides the deep fried seafood and salad selection that is commonly available at fish and chip shops, they have a decent selection of gourmet yiros. The Pork Yiros, the Seafood Yiros and the Mediterranean Yiros (which contains grilled eggplant and capsicum) are not commonly found in other stores.

I was also delighted to see that they have AB’s; a layer of chips, topped with lamb and chicken yiros meat, smothered with garlic, hot chilli and tomato sauce and served with pita bread. The AB’s are served in three sizes; small ($11), medium ($13) and large ($16). Today, I decided to go for the medium size AB, and was digging in within 10 minutes of ordering. I thought the foil container that the meal came in was rather small, particularly compared to what you would get in North Adelaide. The lamb and chicken yiros meat was lean and well marinated. The meat had a strong pungent smell to it and I couldn’t quite put a finger on what it was. The chips were a nice thick cut and cooked to perfection. They were nice and crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. The amount of salt applied was just right. The garlic sauce had a nice thick consistency while the hot chilli sauce was the classic American style.

The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing was pretty much on par with other takeaway places. While my meal was a bit smaller than expected, it was still satisfying. Not the best AB I’ve ever had though.
