Borsch Cafe

Borsch Cafe is located on King William Street in the law precinct just outside Victoria Square. They’re open for breakfast and lunch during the week, and in the evening on Friday night. They’re specialty is Polish cuisine with a modern twist, and they utilise fresh local ingredients to give them that edge. The decor is classical and elegant with good use of timber throughout. With a long narrow floor plan, the venue does appear small but there is sufficient seating both inside and out. For lunch, I ordered the Pierogi with Speck and Sour Cream. The dish came out after 15 minute wait and was nicely presented. The dumpling skin was nice and firm, and fried to a nice golden brown. The potato filling was soft and delicate, and well seasoned. The speck was fried until crispy, while the sour cream gave the dish nice depth. All the components of this dish really worked well together. My only criticism with this dish was that the dumplings were a bit oily.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the service was above average. Drinks arrived on time and I was asked on several occasions how my meal was. The atmosphere was relaxed, even with the busy lunch time crowds. I think the pricing is a bit on the high side. You can go for several tapas dishes or order one of their mains and you could easily spend $20-$30. That’s probably more than what I want to spend for lunch. My dish was $9.50 which only came with 3 pierogi. While the dish was of a high quality, I could have easily have eaten more. There are very few places where you can get Polish food in Adelaide. Combining fresh local ingredients with recipes handed down from generation to generation, this place is good for that unique cultural dining experience. Looking forward to coming back here!
