When one bar closes, another one opens.
With the closing of the much loved Dragonfly, comes a brand new bar, The Taxpayer. Set in the prime location of Victoria Square, this venue is a little bit of everything. This place serves breakfast and lunch throughout the week, but as you head towards the weekend, it transforms itself into a bar with live entertainment and DJ’s at night. The decor can best be described as funky and modern with a nice black and white colour scheme flowing throughout. The polished concrete floors and exposed brickwork add a nice warehouse feel, while the place as a whole certainly has a casual vibe. Set in a long and narrow floor plan, the venue is deceptively large with a fair amount of seating both inside and out.

The menu currently available has a strong emphasis on street food with American and Mediterranean influences. I’ve been informed that the breakfast and lunch menu available during the week will be different to the evening options, and as time progresses, both menus will evolve as more items are added.

Yesterday, I ordered the Jerk Hock Bun. It was ready after a 10 minute wait and was nicely presented. The ham was well marinated, and was nice and crispy, but not overly crunchy. The caramelised onion was a beautiful golden brown while the vegetables were fresh and crisp. The bun was soft and fluffy, yet firm enough to hold all the ingredients. The bun wasn’t overly oily and all the ingredients worked quite well together.

The staff were friendly and the service was pretty good. The atmosphere was relaxed during the day and the pricing is on par with what you pay for at other bars. This place is set to be popular just from the location itself, but what this place has to offer is a pleasant surprise.
