Prince Albert Hotel

The journey to the Prince Albert Hotel can be a dangerous one particularly with the homeless food shelter nearby. Located on Wright Street, close to the notorious Whitmore Square, this is one of the quieter pubs in the city. The main bar is in the centre of the building with two walls that separate another bar and dining room area. The venue itself is neat and tidy with particular aspects, such as the mirrors and tiling at the front, being not too dissimilar to an American 60’s diner.

Today, I ordered the Chicken Schnitzel Parmigiana. The dish came out after a 15 minute wait and was average in presentation. The schnitzel looked old and dry like it had been sitting around for quite some time. The schnitzel was rather small, both in diameter and thickness. The chicken was overcooked to the point that the crumbed exterior was crunchy.

The Napoletana sauce had appropriate coverage over the schnitzel but was sour. A good sauce has a rich subtle sweetness about it. The amount of mozzarella topping was satisfactory and it had spent the right amount of time browning under the grill. There was just something not quite right about the cheese. It looked stale as though a plastic cheese slice was used.

The vegetables in the salad were fresh, however the amount was way too conservative and there was hardly any dressing to be tasted. The chips were the thin variety and were just crunchy. A few more minutes in the deep frier would have made them better. The amount of salt added to the chips was just right.

I thought this place was understaffed. There was only one staff member on duty and he was looking after all the different sections in the pub, and not surprisingly, failing to keep up. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing is reasonable.  My meal cost me $13 which is good value when compare to other venues, however, I felt the quality was a bit lacking. I wasn’t impressed with this place to be honest.
