Naughty Spot

Naughty Spot is a quaint little store set in the popular Hutt Street cafe precinct. The menu is simple with a selection of Belgian waffles, baguettes (only available during the week) and beverages to choose from. The items on offer are constantly changing with a focus on premium locally sourced products wherever possible. Even the packaging they use here is recycled and environmentally friendly.

Originating from Sydney, one of the store owners has 6 years experience making Belgian waffles. The difference between normal waffles and the Belgian waffles is the inclusion of Belgian sugar pearls during the cooking process. The sugar pearl chunks melt and caramelise the waffle, giving it a much chewier texture.

Like the menu, the store is simplistic in design. There are menu boards on one side, and Juliette, the store character on the other. Indoor seating is available with several communal benches holding a capacity of 20. The bright paint colours and the low hanging light fittings give this place a sense of warmth. Behind the counter area is their very own waffle making factory, where waffles are packaged and then shipped interstate.

Yesterday, I ordered The Green and Grey Belgian Waffle. It should be noted that the waffles are freshly made during the week, so if you come here on the weekend like I did, your waffle will be reheated. Having said that, the waffle itself wasn’t too bad. The waffle was richer, denser and sweeter than what I normally experience. It had a unique chewy texture with the added taste of crunchy caramelised pieces. The Belgian chocolate sauce simply made the dessert more decadent, while the green tea ice cream was some of the best I’ve had. No had to break down real green tea bits in my ice cream, just wonderful green tea flavours.

The staff were really friendly and I appreciated how they took the time to tell me about their story. The service was really good and the atmosphere was very relaxed. With regards to the pricing of their Belgian waffles, I do think they’re a bit high considering I can get waffles for half the price at another store. They do have their unique Belgian sugar pearls and the quality of their ice cream is outstanding, but I don’t think it justifies the high price. I also felt that my experience would have been better had the waffle been freshly made.

With all that being said, it’s not a bad place to visit and I do see what they’re trying to achieve here.
