Viva Zapata

Viva Zapata is located in a police station that is over 120 years old and is a joint venture between the owners of Zapata’s and Spice n Ice. Situated on the seaward end of Semaphore Road and perched upon a hilltop, this venue boasts breathtaking views of Semaphore beach. With the original lockups still intact, the location is ideal for detaining customers who don’t pay for their meals. But with all seriousness, the place is traditionally decorated with good attention to detail. The bright yellow and orange walls,  the strategically placed Mexican hats, the wagon wheel light fittings and the small Inca inspired rugs, give this place a warm cosy feel.

Last night, I ordered the Bistec Ranchero, a dish that is on the Zapata’s menu. The meal was ready after a 15 minute wait and was average in presentation. The prime fillet steak was lean, well marinated and of a nice thick cut. The meat was beautifully seared on both sides with a nice juicy pink centre. The rice was well cooked with nice individual grains, and the vegetables in the salad were fresh and crisp. The frijoles were silky and smooth in texture with a thick consistency.

My friend had the Chicken Tostada and was impressed with the sheer size of the dish. She had no complaints with her meal.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and we were grateful that they were still willing to serve us at 9pm on a Sunday night. The service was above average with drinks arriving promptly and plates cleared as we finished. The atmosphere was relaxed with beautiful views of Semaphore beach. With one of the owner’s of Zapata’s running this place, it’s no surprise that the price point is identical.

If you like Zapata’s, you’ll love this place.

Food is excellent but beware when we ordered fajitas for two we were charged $25 for fajitas but we dined in our bill was $74 for fajitas for 3 people. I can’t understand how they can charge an extra $50 for an extra serving.

    1. Did you notify the business that there was a mistake in the billing?
