You would think a place that uses the word “Thai” in their name would have some Thai dishes on their menu. Well, they don’t, and it always pays to have a look at the menu before you sit down at the restaurant.
Set in a long and narrow building, the interior of this place is tastefully decorated. The timber furnishings, the tiled counter, the low hanging light fittings and the natural earth tones gives this place a sense of warmth.
Today, I ordered the Sweet and Sour Pork. The dish was ready after a 10 minute wait and came out with average presentation. My favourite Chinese restaurant down Gouger Street uses thin lean slices of pork in their version of this dish and not only does it taste better, but it’s healthier. This place doesn’t do that, but opts for the more traditional method of using fatty morsels of pork scotch fillet. The serving was quite conservative with only half a dozen pieces of pork. The batter was soft and chewy, while the sweet and sour sauce had a good ratio of white wine vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, tomato sauce and vegetable stock. The vegetables used in the sauce were nice and crisp, and the rice was gluggy like it had been sitting in the rice cooker for quite some time.

The staff were friendly, although English wasn’t their strong point and communication was a problem from start to finish. The service was average and the atmosphere was relaxed. The pricing was reasonable with my lunch costing me $8.50. Their normal main menu prices are on par with the cheapest eateries down Gouger Street. My dish on the other hand, was rather ordinary and was equivalent to a food court meal. It was OK but it could have been so much better.
