Laksa House 2

After reading the positive reviews about this place, I thought I would give this place a try. Located on the western side of Flinders Street, Laksa House 2 is a small place that holds about 26 people (20 on the inside and 6 on the outside). There’s a Laksa House 1 in the Market Plaza food court, so this place must be the sequel.

The decor here is basic, tired and a little run down. I would probably go so far as to say it’s probably due for a bit of renovation work. This place seems to be fairly popular with the lunch time crowd. It appears most of their clientele are nearby city workers. Laksa is the name of the game at this place, however they do have fried rice and fried noodle dishes.

Eating Laksa is like eating spaghetti. No matter how careful you are, there’s going to be food splatter! I was wearing a light coloured business shirt today and decided I wouldn’t take the risk. Instead of ordering one of their signature laksa’s, I went for the Chicken Curry instead. Meals are ordered and payed for at the counter, and within 10 minutes, my meal was ready.

The Curry Chicken was nicely presented and the serving size was generous. The meat was tender, succulent and well cooked, however, they used thigh fillet instead of lean chicken breast. I wasn’t impressed when I came across some cartilage in the meat. The chicken had a slightly smokey flavour about it, which indicated that the curry sauce was just poured over the top. I suspect the meat used was also used for their Chicken Rice. Their curry sauce was a bit bland, and it was almost as though they forgot to add curry powder. The were a subtle kick as an after taste, but I didn’t really like it. The rice had nice firm individual grains and was nicely cooked.

The staff here were really friendly and the service was fast and efficient. Even with the busy lunch time crowds, the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. The pricing is fairly reasonable with the maximum price of a main being $12.80. With the benefit of hindsight, I probably should have went for the Laksa. As with everything in life, there are no rewards if you don’t take risks. I should have risked laksa sauce splatter on my clean business shirt in order to have a better meal.

If we’re using movie analogies here, my meal at Laksa House 2 was a bit of a flop. I’m not sure how much money Laksa House 1 made at the box office, but Laksa House 2 should go straight to DVD!
