Creperie Bruxelles

A friend told me about Creperie Bruxelles several weeks before it opened. I could have rocked up on the first day, but I find new businesses need to find their feet, in order to show customers what they really can offer. Knowing this, I decided to wait a few weeks and let the hype die down a bit. I also felt it was fitting to write review #600 on a dessert place.

Creperie Bruxelles is located near the beginning of Henley Beach Road, just on the out skirts of the city. It’s not the most obvious location for a dessert place, but I think this side of the city actually needs it. As their name suggests, crepes are their specialty, however, they also do waffles, poffertjes (small fluffy Dutch pancakes) and your typical beverages. They also have a range of gluten free options but I wasn’t sure what they were. There are no menus here, just a board on the wall which describes their menu items.

The place itself is rather smallish with seating for 34 people. Having come back from Belgium recently, I don’t particularly recall any places that were decorated like this venue. If anything, this place reminded me of something I would find in a small alley way in Paris. It’s quite nicely done though; the glossy timber tables, the custom built kitchen and counter areas, the foreign posters on the wall and the ornate fittings, really create a warm and cosy atmosphere.

Tonight, I ordered the Crepe L’Originale; crepes wrapped in sugar lemon and topped with walnuts. There was the option to choose a side serving of ice cream or cream. Naturally, I chose ice cream because it’s tastes so much better (and obviously has a higher fat content). The presentation of the dish was simple yet elegant. The crepes were piping hot and were cooked to a perfect golden brown. The sugar lemon filling was more zesty than it was sweet. Perfect for getting your vitamin C intake and contracting type 2 diabetes at the same time.

The staff here were warm and inviting, and the service was really good. The pricing is pretty much on par with other places, with menu items ranging between $9 and $11. There is definitely better value for money here. The Belgium crepes are slightly thicker (meaning they’re more filling) and you get 2 of them! If there was one thing that annoyed me about this place, it was their front door. You have to turn the door knob and push to open the door, and do a similar thing in reverse to close it. It’s not going to affect their rating because they still make some of the best crepes in Adelaide.
