The Loose Caboose

The Loose Caboose is conveniently located just across the road from the Entertainment Centre tram stop. Alternatively, you can get there by train if you get off at the first stop on the Grange/Outer Harbour line. If you’re really lazy, you can drive there, and if you’re lucky, you can grab one of the 5 parking spots out at the front.

Located in beautifully restored railway station with a blend of old and new, the Loose Caboose specialises in breakfast and brunch. Breakfast is very popular here and it is not uncommon to see people lining up for a feed. They don’t take bookings so it’s best to get here at around 9am.

Today, I ordered the Smashed Avocado with Poached Egg. All meals arrived at different times and was dependent on the complexity of making the dish. One person in the group only got his meal after every one had finished theirs.

My dish was simple yet nicely presented. The avocado was smooth and creamy, and some of the best I’ve ever tasted. The feta was fresh and had a slight hint of garlic, while the radish added a crunchy texture to the dish. The sour dough bread was nice, but it was toasted a bit too long for my liking.

If you’ve read my previous reviews, you would know that I’m fairly lucky when it comes to finding things in my food. Today was no different. Inside my beautifully cooked poached egg was an egg shell the size of a 5 cent piece. I informed a waiter and the waiter just said he would pass this information to the chef, with a care factor of zero. I’m guessing these things do happen and it could have been worse. I could have found a hair.

The place isn’t all that large, so you may find yourself sitting next to strangers, particularly with a large table. Customer turn over is the name of the game here, so the staff are really quick to clear the plates. The atmosphere is quite vibrant, but it isn’t too loud that you can’t hear one another speak.

The quality of the food is good here, however, it’s slightly on the pricier side, particularly when you compare it to other recognised breakfast places. They lose one star for the egg shell in my poached egg.
