There’s a new place in town that makes the AB better than everyone else. It was only by chance did I venture out this way to order one. One of original AB creators, the Blue and White Cafe, just happened to be closed for holidays, and with my insurmountable craving, I travelled to the Eastern suburbs to get one.
This store is modern and spacious, particularly for a takeaway shop. They offer both indoor and outdoor dining, and offer your traditional Greek takeaway dishes as well as a selection of desserts. This family run store does a roaring trade, and you can tell by the amount of meat they have on the rotisserie each day. One thing I love about this place is the air conditioning. There is an unbearable heat wave at the moment, and this place was comfortably cool inside.
Looking at the prices for an AB at this store, the small AB is about the same price as a normal sized AB in North Adelaide. The large AB is a few dollars more. Being a risk taker, I decided to for the large AB. After 15 minutes, my AB was being put together. On goes a layer of shoe string fries, followed by a layer of lamb meat, followed by the chilli, garlic and tomato sauce. But wait, there’s more! The store assistant then proceeds to put on another layer of chips, meat and sauces. I was so overwhelmed I almost had to sit down.
The AB was fantastic and delicious! The lamb was lean and perfectly marinated. The amount of meat was more than generous, and equivalent to what you would get in two yiros. The shoe string fries were crunchy but not over cooked, and the chicken salt they use was lip smackingly good. The garlic sauce was home made and you could taste the fresh garlic in the sauce. The chilli sauce had a bit of kick but not too much, which was just right for a day like today.
I was in heaven as I ate my AB in air conditioned comfort. What makes a great AB? The quality of the meat, the quality of the chips and how well they’ve been cooked, the quality of the garlic sauce, how hot their chilli sauce is, and their serving quantity. This place had absolutely everything right. Being a big eater, I could not finish this AB, although I was up for the challenge.

Why are AB’s so addictive? It’s the different consistencies with every bite. You get different proportions of sauces with each mouthful as well as varying combinations of meat and potato. AB’s are just yummy and are a perfect cure for a hangover. It brings back such fond memories, particularly of those 3am mornings back at University.
I cannot recommend this place enough for an AB. It was fantastic and I will certainly be coming back for more.
