Burger Foundry – St Morris – New Store

Burger Foundry is arguably one of the best burger joints in Adelaide. I still have fond memories of how good their burgers were, when I last visited their previous store.

The problem with the old store was that there were only a handful of seats, and it never really was dine in friendly. As the popularity of the store grew, it was time to expand and make it more mainstream. This meant moving to more modern premises and providing a better experience for customers. The aim is turn Burger Foundry into a franchise, so expect to see more stores pop up around the state and beyond.

As far as the menu is concerned, all the popular burgers have been retained, some of the existing burgers have undergone name changes and new burgers have been introduced. On top of that, two types of pork ribs, a couple of extra sides, and a new salad are now being offered.

The trendy places these days are decked out with an industrial warehouse design, and this place is no different. I loved the exposed ceilings and numerous low hanging light fittings. The floor to ceiling windows at each of it’s 3 frontages maximises the amount of natural light that comes in. The use of timber furnishings is quite prominent, and the place just has a casual relaxed vibe about it.

The Texan Madness burger is one of my all time favourites. The heat content is high as it uses a combination of spicy hot chipotle chilli and tangy tomato salsa. Add bacon, cheddar cheese, rocket and a smoked barbecue sauce and you have a very tasty burger. The meat patty is a decent size and cooked to perfection. The cheddar cheese is nicely melted over the beef patty, and the rocket is fresh and crisp. There’s a perfect balance between the heat of the chipotle chilli, the sweetness of the barbecue sauce and the saltiness of the bacon. It really is a burger you need to try at least once in your life.

The Angus Steak burger is one of their new additions and consists of bacon, caramelised onions, tomatoes, Swiss cheese and rocket. As I bite into the burger, I’m greeted by several layers of tender, juicy lean layers of steak. The tomato slices are ripened and the rocket is fresh and crisp. The saltiness of the bacon is balanced out by the sweetness of the caramelised onions. The most expensive in their burger line up, but well worth the cost.

The Rocky Mountain High burger consists of caramelised onions, tomato, bacon, rocket and cheese. The beef patty was juicy and succulent, and perfectly cooked. The patty had a nice pinkish tinge in the centre which is just how I like it. The natural sweetness of the caramelised onions was balanced by the saltiness of the bacon. The rocket was fresh and crisp, and the cheese was nicely melted over the beef patty.

The Hen House Burger is their most basic chicken burger. They use a decent sized chicken thigh fillet that is free of chemicals and hormones. The meat is tender and succulent, and you can taste the smokey grilled flavours on the chicken. The burger comes with ripe sliced tomatoes and fresh crisp lettuce, which is perfect for those who like to keep it healthy and simple.

The Blacksmith’s Wife comes with a patty that is made from beetroot, oats and walnuts. The burger is then topped off with cucumber, tomato, capsicum and lettuce. I must admit, I’m not really a fan of vegetarian burgers, but this one wasn’t too bad. The patty was interesting as you had the sweetness from the beetroot combined with the crunchiness from the walnuts. This was further complimented by crispness of the cucumber, capsicum and lettuce.

I must admit that I’m a fan of onion rings from Hungry Jack’s (Burger King, for my overseas readers). These onion rings were actually better. The onion rings were much larger in diameter and were twice as thick. The coating was nice and firm, and you could taste the full flavour of onion with every bite.

I’ve always been a fan of their hand cut chips because they’re not the mass processed manufactured variety. They’re nice and crispy on the outside, and soft and fluffy in the centre. The sea salt and spices added to the chips was just right.

The Mozzarella and Bacon Tater Tots was something I never had before. The outer coating was nice and crisp, and enclosed was a soft potato centre. The mozzarella was well dispersed into the potato and you could detect the odd hint of bacon.

The Sweet and Sticky Ribs are a classic favourite. The pork ribs were well marinated and cooked to perfection. The meat was so soft and tender, it simply fell off the bone. The sauce is not overly sweet which allows you eat a whole lot more. You’ll certainly be licking the tips of your fingers after this dish.

The Spicy and Tangy Ribs are reserved for those who like it hot. The sauce is a bit more spicy than it is tangy, but what’s life without a bit of excitement? Make sure you have a drink on hand if you go for this one.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the service was fantastic. Drinks arrived promptly and plates were cleared as we finished. The atmosphere was relaxed in the pleasant new surroundings. The pricing is the same as the previous store and on par with their nearby competitors. The burgers range from $10-$19, the sides $4-$6 and the ribs are $26.

Verdict: Burger Foundry are known for their great burgers, but now they have a dine in experience to match.

I went tonight and was disappointed with the chips 😦 I’m sure they’re not the same as before. These were more rustic, almost like healthy home cooked wedges with no crunch. Sad.
