Kefi

Kefi is located on Tapleys Hill Road in Glenelg and is best described as a Greek Tavern that sells cafe style food. This place is quite popular, and in order to get a table, you’ll need to book well in advance. They also have a reputation for large servings so it’s best to come here with a big appetite.

The first thing you’ll notice when you walk into the place are the beautiful aromas of charcoaled meats. Beware, because you’ll smell the like the food after you leave. The place itself is not that big and it becomes obvious that they’ve tried to cram in too many tables. There was exactly one hand width between our table and the next, and there was a lot of chair bumping as you worked your way around the tables. The decor would be described as modern and yet interesting. There are film strips on the ceiling and pictures of actors on the wall.

For dinner, I ordered the Lamb Souvlaki. The meals were ready after a 20 minute wait and the dishes were very well presented. The servings are indeed massive and I was full from looking at the size of my dish. My initial thoughts were that one skewer of meat wasn’t enough, but I quickly learnt that two skewers was way too much. The lamb was well marinated and perfectly cooked. The meat was tender and succulent with a nice pinkish tinge in the centre. The wonderful charcoal flavours coming from the meat was heavenly. The chargrilled capsicums on the skewers provided a lovely natural sweetness.

The lamb skewers were sitting on a bed of fried potatoes. The potatoes were nice and crisp on the outside with soft and fluffy centres. Other accompaniments included the grilled pita bread with garlic dip. The pita bread was soft and delicate, and you could taste the smokey charcoal flavours. The garlic dip had a nice thick consistency and complimented the bread well. There was also a side serving of Greek Salad. The vegetables and feta cheese were fresh, however, I thought the dressing was over applied.

My friend had the Chicken Souvlaki. Almost identical to mine with the exception of the protein. She said the chicken was amazingly good.

The staff were friendly and the service was good. Drinks arrived promptly and plates were cleared soon after we finished. We did find it difficult to get the attention of some of the waitresses and our bill took unusually long to arrive after we asked for it. The atmosphere was vibrant, particularly due to the popularity of this place. It’s always full because people come here for the food. The pricing is higher than average with mains ranging between $25-$35. My Lamb Souvlaki set me back $33 which was fair considering the quality of the meal and the fact I barely managed to finish it.

Verdict: The food is of a high quality and the servings are huge. Consider sharing one main between two. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
