With street food being all the rage at the moment, the popular Parwana Afghan restaurant has opened a more casual version of it’s parent restaurant in the heart of the city. Located in the popular east end location of Ebeneezer Place, Kutchi Deli Parwana offers a selection of kebabs, curries, dumplings, bolani (flat bread with vegetable filling), vegetarian dishes and sweets. This quaint little store has traditional decor, and seating is limited to a bar table along the window frontage and outdoor tables and chairs. There are two entrances at this venue with orders taken on the counter to the right. In true street food fashion, all dishes are served in disposable containers with throw away wooden cutlery.
For lunch, I ordered the Chapli Kebab. The food was ready after a 10 minute wait and it was nicely presented in a paper box. It came with a plastic tub of yoghurt sauce which is made up of yoghurt, mint, garlic and salt. The spicy lamb patty was a mixture of onion, cumin powder, coriander powder, fresh chilli, garlic paste, ginger paste, tomatoes, black pepper and coriander. The meat was well marinated and a bit on the dry side, however, this was balanced out by the runny yoghurt sauce. I also detected a bit of tartiness in the patty and I suspect a bit of sumac may have been added. The coriander, tomato and Spanish onion were fresh and this helped alleviate the dryness of the meat. The bread was a Persian flat bread which was similar to Barbari bread. It was baked to a nice golden brown and was firm enough to hold all the ingredients.

My friend ordered the Morgh Degee which is basically chicken marinated in Afghan spices. She said it was nice and would have it again.

The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the location is great for people watching. Both the kebabs were $14 each which is fair considering the serving size and the uniqueness of the dishes. I personally didn’t like the kebab in my meal, only because it was more of an acquired taste, however, my friend said her kebab was good.
