Mazzi’s Kitchen

Anybody that frequents The Market Shed on Holland on a Sunday morning would be familiar with Mazzi’s Kitchen as they have a pop up stall there. They’re also physically located in a double fronted two storey bluestone cottage along Gilles Street. The place is basically decorated with a handful of seats both inside and out. The number of dishes available is also limited with a small selection of precooked Malaysian curries being kept warm behind the counter.

For lunch, I ordered the Beef Rendang, arguably one of the most famous dishes in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. The owner behind the counter tried to present the dish nicely but the rice failed to hold together when compressed into a bowl. The beef was provided in generous amounts, and was lean and tender. The meat is cooked in a spice paste that consists of shallots, lemongrass, ginger, garlic and chillies, which you could physically see. The flavours were just right with the dish being more sweet than it was spicy.

My friend had the Vegetable Curry and said it was good.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the service was good. The atmosphere was relaxed as it is in the quieter part of the city and it is a place that not many people know about. The pricing is more than reasonable with mains costing $8.50. This is a bargain considering the portion size and food quality.

Verdict: The Malaysian food here is cheap and authentic with good serving sizes. The selection is small but at least they serve up the dishes they do best.
