Adelaide’s love affair with everything Mexican continues as a new eatery called Holy Guacamoly has recently opened in the trendy Norwood cafe precinct. If you can imagine a Mexican version of Subway, this is it, although places like Burp, Arriba Grill and Zambrero already follow a similar concept. First off, you need to choose the product type, which is either crispy tacos, soft shell tacos, burritos, nachos, quesadilla or chorizo dogs. You then have 4 fillings to choose from which is your 3 common proteins and a vegetarian option. Finally, you select from 5 different sauces, which range from not hot to very hot. A chilli rating will give you an indication as to the degree of heat.

The store itself is quite small with a seating capacity of 16 people. The decor has a Mexican warehouse feel that combines exposed brickwork with bright yellows and greens. The patterned wallpaper gives this place a bit of authenticity, and the laminate flooring and timber counter top provides a casual vibe.

Tonight, I ordered the Beef Nachos. The dish was made on the spot and the presentation was as good as nachos can be. The beef was tender, succulent and well marinated. It was definitely the star of the dish. The black beans were soft and delicate, while the salsa was nice and refreshing. The avocado was smooth and creamy, while the corn was juicy with natural sweetness. The corn chips were straight out the pack and got a bit soggy from the topping, but this is nothing new.

My friend had the Poco Burrito which comes in a 10 inch multigrain tortilla. The presentation wasn’t photo worthy so no picture was taken. She did report that it was one of the best burrito’s she’s ever eaten.
The staff here are friendly but the service can be a bit slow. The atmosphere was relaxed, although due to the size of the place, I would say most of the customers are take away. The pricing is average with the most expensive menu item being just under $11. My nachos cost $9.90 which was satisfactory in size.
This place is good I guess as what you see is what you get. Other than the Chocolate Nachos that they offer on the dessert menu, there’s nothing here that I can’t get at any other Mexican place.
