Gringos

Gringos is a Mexican restaurant conveniently located in the heart of Glenelg, right on Moseley Square. With a world map drawn as a wall mural, straw roof over the bar area, and dark coloured walls, you can see that they’ve attempted to make this place look traditional. It’s not as impressive as some other places, but I guess it will do.

Tonight, I ordered the Chilli Con Carne. The meal was ready 15 minutes after ordering and was very nicely presented. The Chilli Con Carne was delicious, full of flavour and well balanced. The jalapeno on top of the melted cheese gave the dish a nice kick, and the sour cream and green shallots were as expected. I thought the bowl the Chilli Con Carne was served in was deceptively small. The dish was quite shallow and there wasn’t much under the topping.

The rice was well cooked with nice individual grains and fragrant infused spices. The vegetables were nice and crisp in the salad, however, the mayonnaise was bland and over applied.

My friend had the Beef Burrito. She said it was nice and seemed to be more satisfied with her dish than I was with mine.

Contrary to what I’ve read about this place, the service was quite good. The staff were really friendly and efficient in what they were doing. The atmosphere was relaxed, although the afternoon sun shining into the restaurant became annoying. Based on the serving sizes, I thought their price point was slightly higher than what it should be. My dish cost $18 which was just satisfactory.

The dining experience as a whole wasn’t too bad, although there is better Mexican food out there.
